Product Description

The Evolve LFM-20 Isolated Contact Fixture Module is a component of the Evolve lighting control system. Wire the Isolated Contact Fixture Module and program it from the Wireless Controller to operate loads. Inclusion of this Switch on the EHC-100 Wireless Controller menu allows remote ON/OFF control of load connected. This Isolated Contact Fixture Module is designed to work with other Z-Wave enabled devices. Z-Wave nodes of other types can be included on the network and will also act as repeaters if they support this function. As part of a Z-Wave network, the LFM-20 will also act as a wireless repeater to insure that commands intended for another device in the network are received. This is useful when the device would otherwise be out of the radio range of the wireless controller.

Works great as garage door opener for SmartThings

Works great as garage door opener for SmartThings
Flawless integration with SmartThings! To wire this up, I bought a Husky replacement appliance power cord from Home Depot, 16 gauge blue wire to lengthen the garage door leads, and a few wire nuts. I also bought a PVC Carlon box to house everything. I drilled one hole in the box for the power cord, and a small diameter hole for the garage door opener leads. With the relay and all the wiring connections sealed in the box, I mounted the box on my garage door opener frame and connected to the contacts. The critical step for me was integrating the relay with a door sensor in SmartThings as a garage door opener. This allows me to fire the relay from a door shortcut (see photo) and get open/close status from the same shortcut. One word of caution: Without setting the relay as an garage door opener and using the "Door Open/Close" Smart App, the default setting for the relay in ST is either "on" or "off." While this works, it is a bit crude. The major safety issue I found is that when the relay is set to "on," my safety curtain is disabled. In other words, the garage door won't respond to any other switches and will not stop moving. Setting up the Door Open/Close will cause the relay to only momentarily fire, which triggers the door, and preserves the ability for other physical switches to control the garage door. The other beautiful thing about the Door Open/Close is that the door control is on the same icon that indicates open or close status.I am using the Ecolink Z-Wave Door/Window Sensor (DWZWAVE2-ECO) sensor to monitor open close status. I chose this device because the magnet can be up to 5/8" away from the sensor.

I purchased this, but didn't get a chance to try and install for a couple of months. I have installed, but it does not work. Smartthings sees the device and is sending signals (I can hear the relay clicking). I have wired every possible way and nothing works. I tried to contact Evolve and they would not help, said to contact seller. So I contacted seller and they said to contact Amazon, who certainly can't help with a technical problem! Don't expect any help on this one.

As others have noted, I purchased this switch to open and close my garage door using a third party Z-wave system - in this case the Smartthings hub. I wired the switch to a Raynor garage door opener through the same wires as the wall mounted opener. In addition to the switch, I purchased two different colored wires (1 foot of each will work - I recommend white and red), two wire nuts, a Husky tool replacement cord with white, black and green connections ($10 at Home Depot), and a metal Junction box (the evolve switch doesn't have mounting hardware) with a removable cover so you can access the LED button to program the module. The wiring is very straightforward and follows the directions that come with the switch.

If you pair the system with the Smartthings hub, note that through the Things screen you will connect it as a "switch". If you try to use it through Things, you will send an "on" command which will open or close the door (just like you were hitting the wall mounted opener). The wall mounted opener will no longer work when your Smartthings switch is in the "on" command. You would otherwise have to then switch it to "off" to be able to use the wall mounted opener. This is similar to what other reviews call for when they say to program a 2 second delay to switch it off. Using the Smartthings hub, add the switch to "doors and locks". If you also have a SmartSence Multi, you can see if its open or closed. Once it's in the doors and locks module, use it to open and close the door there. You then won't have to hit the "on" switch to open and "off" to be able to use your wall mounted opener. It does it for you automatically.

With the exception of having to figure the above out, this was the easiest solution I've found to automating your garage door and has worked flawlessly the first 25 times opening and closing.

I am using this product with  Ecolink Z-Wave Wireless Tilt Sensor - ECO-TILT-US . I mounted the tilt sensor on the garage door and installed the LFM-20 at the garage door opener mounted on the ceiling in the garage. Installation was relatively straight forward. There are good YouTube videos and information on the SmartThings site. Wire up a three prong plug with the black, white, and green wires. You can tap into the power terminals inside your garage door opener if you want or do not have another electrical plug in the ceiling. The blue wires go to the opener. I was able to find my garage door opener instructions on line and find the correct terminals to use. It took about 20 minutes for me to wire and set up. I used wire nuts and a wire stripper, but did not need any specialized tools.

Pairing was not straight forward and removing it from the z-wave network was very difficult. This setup difficulty is the reason for the one star deduction. The instructions say to tap the button on the device to pair it. That never seemed to work for me. Comments on line (and in reviews here) indicated to tap twice. I ended up tapping the button several times in quick succession and it paired to my SmartThings controller.

Once in SmartThings it showed up as a power switch. It had the icon of an electrical plug and it seemed to work my garage door intermittently. I thought that perhaps SmartThings paired the device improperly so I tried to remove the device from my network. The instructions say to tap, tap, tap, hold. That did not work for me. I found out that you have to tap three times as fast as possible (Superman fast) and hold. You have to complete the tap process in less than a second. Very annoying and not in the directions. I had to spend a long time in the forums to find this information. So the pairing instructions in the documentation are wrong and the unpairing information is woefully lacking.

Once I removed and re-added the device to SmartThings, the plug icon remained and I figured out how the switch was working. By default it works just like a standard light switch. When ON it sends power continuously through the blue wires to the load. In the case of my garage door opener, it would open (or close) the door when the device was switched from OFF to ON.

Switching the device from ON to OFF removed the power from the blue wires, but does nothing to the garage door. So to operate my door, I had to use the app to switch from OFF to ON and the door would open. To close the door, I had to switch the app from ON to OFF and then from OFF to ON again. If the device was left in the ON position, the push button on my garage wall would not operate the door. My garage door needed a pulse signal from OFF to ON to operate.

After some more searching, I discovered that you can have SmartThings change the operation of the switch to a pulse signal. Instructions are at http://blog.smartthings.com/news/smartthings-updates/automate-your-garage/

Put simply, you click the + like you are adding a new device, select the search icon (magnifying glass) in the upper right and search for 'evolve' or 'garage' and select the LFM-20 from the list. Select 'Top Alerts and Actions' and then 'Control your Garage Door'. After following the instructions, this will add another item to your dashboard for the status (if you have a tilt or open/close sensor) as well as changing the operation of the LFM-20 to a pulse type controller. Once set up properly, when you select to operate the garage door, the device will turn from OFF to ON for a second and then from ON to OFF so it is ready for the next activation. The icon also changes to a garage door.

Once the device was operating like a pulse I liked it a lot better. This sensor has more applications than just operating a garage door, so I am not "blaming" this device in any way nor am I deducting any stars. I am now quite happy with the device and really like that I can check if I left the garage door open when I get to work.

In case it is not clear, I can still use the wall switch and the wireless remote in my car to operate the garage door. This is another way to operate the door, but it does not remove any other functionality.

I initially purchased this to pair with a Smart Things hub. I've spent hours reading forums and figuring out how to pair because the included documentation is not correct. This product has a great intent, but does not live up to the price. It's garbage.

I bought this relay to automate my garage door with Smart Things. It does work, but configuring it is a nightmare.

The documentation is very weak compared to other Evolve products. It doesn't say much about how to pair it or not to pair it to your hub.

Once it's properly installed it works great but be prepared for some potential issues with the pairing.

In my case, I think that it was paired but STs never recognized it. After that, I couldn't have STs to detect it...even if I tried 1 button press, 2, 3 or 10. I contacted the Evolve support group and they were very lousy in the answer, it didn't help. I contacted SmartThings and they explain me very clearly how to troubleshoot the installation.

I ended up un-pairing the device following STs manual. After that, I made sure that the Evolve LFM-20 was installed in my garage door (for this, follow the schema detailed in the instructions and the instructions of your garage door) and that the STs hub was very close to it (using a wifi range extender). It worked.

Since then I had zero issues.
